Het Lage Land gaat over het heden, verleden en de toekomst van Nederland als laagland aan de zee, als delta van de rivieren. Voor de tentoonstelling en het boek is vanuit de helikopter niet alleen de kust van Zeeland tot Groningen gefotografeerd, ook de grote rivieren: Maas, Rijn, IJssel en Schelde. De unieke luchtfoto’s laten zien hoe overstromingen littekens in het landschap hebben achtergelaten, welk gevaar het water met zich mee brengt en hoe dijken, keringen, overlaten en stuwen ons kwetsbare land beschermen. De strijd tegen het water blijft in deze tijd van klimaatverandering voortgaan. Het groot formaat boek bevat naast de unieke paginagrote luchtfoto’s – 40 x 25,5 cm – ook een uitgebreid register met achtergrondinformatie over onder andere de Afsluitdijk, de Deltawerken, Ruimte voor de Rivier, de Maaswerken, de Zwakke Schakels van de Kust en de Zandmotor. Het Lage Land explores the past, present, and future of the Netherlands as a lowlands near the sea. For the exhibition and the book, helicopter photographs were taken of not only the coast from Zeeland to Groningen, but also the major rivers: the Meuse, Rhine, IJssel, and Scheldt. The unique aerial photographs show how floods have left scars in the landscape, the dangers posed by water, and how dikes, barriers, spillways, and weirs protect our vulnerable country. The battle against water continues in this era of climate change. In addition to the unique full-page aerial photographs – 40 x 25.5 cm – the large-format book also includes an extensive index with background information on, among other things, the Afsluitdijk, the Delta Works, Room for the River, the Maas Project. An essay by Nanda van den Berg, chief curator of photography at the Huis Marseille Museum, highlights the photographic quality of Swart’s work.
